Celebrity Pantyhose Tribute

Is Madonna’s fishnet pantyhose waistline going to be the next big legwear fashion trend?

After surprising us in 2005 with her “Hung Up” music video, where one could see Madonna’s beautifully fit legs in full tan fishnet leggings glory, as illustrated on the image below, the fully acclaimed queen of pop has managed to amaze us yet again with her newest “Give me All Your Luvin” video.

Fishnet leggings specifically, the style Madonna wears in the “Hung Up” video, sit in an interesting middle ground between sheer pantyhose and fully opaque tights: the open weave shows a lot of skin through the pattern while still giving full leg coverage, which is why they read as bold and a little daring even next to something as simple as the tan colourway she chose here rather than the more common black. Tan and nude-toned fishnet in particular tends to look less overtly “costume” and more like an actual styling choice than black fishnet does, since the pattern reads more subtly against skin-toned mesh.

The style has aged well precisely because it’s simple: a fishnet legging or tight in a single colour works under shorts, a skirt, or on its own the same way it did in 2005, and it’s one of the few legwear trends from that era that never really needed reinventing to stay current.

Worth noting too that this particular video, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” leaned on a totally different legwear look from “Hung Up,” swapping the fishnet for cheerleader-style knee socks, which says something about how comfortable Madonna has always been treating legwear as a costume choice that changes with the concept of each video rather than sticking to one signature style throughout her career.

Either way, fishnet remains the pairing most people associate with her, likely because it reads as instantly recognisable even in a single still image, which is exactly what a music video thumbnail or a magazine photo needs to work.

The choice for fishnets is maintained but, matching the darker atmosphere of the new video, the colour of choice for the undergarment was black. Still, what managed to catch our attention was obviously not the change of colour but the change of style with a full featured display of the 53 years old pop singer’s pantyhose’s waistline in several shots throughout the video.

While the whole underwear as outerwear look spearheaded by the outrageous Lady Gaga is still out there in full bloom and gaining fans by the minute we believe it is not something most women feel courageous (or demented?) enough to try out in public, especially when you have hundreds of halls of shame spread throughout the internet inciting mobs to pick up torches and forks and chase celebrities bold enough to do it back to their evil lairs of fashion doom.

On the other hand, the slightly less outrageous but still original and alluring “visible waistline look” is something that we can picture teenage to mid twenties girls feeling confident enough to sponsor and to turn into a new rebellious legwear fashion statement possibly burying the whole “leggings as pants” look (and controversy) in the process.

Yes, it’s true that you’ll be showing off something that was previously meant to be deeply tucked away under your skirt or shorts but still it is considerably less aggressive to the public eye than fully featuring your buttocks in tight (and sometimes see-through) leggings like we’ve all been seeing for a few years now (not that we have anything against it here at PParty, we’re completely ok with it as long as you have the legs to go along with it).
